OUR HISTORY

THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF OUR CHURCH

How It All Began…

In the spring of 1997 a group of people began meeting in homes seeking God’s will about starting a new church. This small group of believers longed for a church where they could worship and serve God in harmony and peace. As they prayed they felt led by the Lord to step out in faith and start a new church.

Covenant Baptist Church was officially formed and held its first Sunday morning service on June 8, 1997 in the Sullivan Building of Anderson College, now Anderson University. There were fifty-four people in attendance as Rick Smith shared the message from God’s Word. Robbie Smith preached in the evening service.  Wednesday evening services were held in the homes of church members.

On July 20,1997, Rev. Steve Silvey preached a trial sermon in view of a call. Eighty-four people were in attendance and the church voted unanimously to call him as their pastor. His first Sunday as the pastor of Covenant Baptist was August 3, 1997.

After meeting at Anderson College for two months, the church moved to an old store building located at 601-D Pearman Dairy Road on August 3, 1997. The church began to fill up quickly, so some walls were knocked out and an overflow room was set up to accommodate growth.

As the church continued to grow it was clear by the fall of 1998 that it was time to buy property and begin building a permanent home for the church. Though the church was a new start and did not have much money in the bank, the Lord continued to faithfully provide both the people and the resources to make this dream a reality.

On April 18th, 1999 the church broke ground for their new facilities at 120 Centerville Road. With the help of Brotherhood Builders, church volunteers, and volunteer construction teams throughout the southeast the ten-thousand square foot church was built and occupied in January of 2000.

As the Lord continued to bless, new staff members were added and in November of 2001, the church added an early service to accommodate continued growth as a five thousand square foot addition was being constructed. This addition was dedicated to the Lord on November 24, 2002.

In the fall of 2007 the Lord opened up an incredible and unusual door of opportunity. As the church faced another shortage of space and was making plans to build, the Lord made it possible for Covenant Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church to exchange church buildings. Covenant was growing and out of space, while Northside had much more space than it needed.

On February 25th, 2007 Covenant Baptist Church had its first service at its present location at 4521 Liberty Highway. With this move the Lord blessed us with thirty acres of land and 54,000 square foot of building space.

Today Covenant Baptist Church continues to grow. We currently average about 400 in Sunday school and about 625 in worship. God has greatly blessed Covenant far beyond what we could have dreamed.  As we continue to follow the Lord and give him all the credit, we believe THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
